Siena Defeats Men's Lacrosse

Box Score

The Canisius College men's lacrosse team lost at Siena on Saturday afternoon, 14-2. Siena improves to 8-3 and 4-0 in MAAC play, while the Griffs drops to 2-7 and 1-3 against league foes.

"The score tells the whole story," said Canisius head coach Randy Mearns. "It certainly wasn't our day today. We had too many turnovers, too many misguided slides, some unlucky bounces and we couldn't respond to the pressure of a very important MAAC game. We didn't perform the way we are capable of on both sides of the ball, which leads to the disappointing outcome."

Seniors Travis Gibbons and Jimmy Haney both scored for the Griffs, while freshman Tim Edwards registered a pair of assists. Senior Sean Callahan and freshman Alex Govenettio combined to make 11 saves for Canisius.

The Saints netted the first goal of the game only to see the Griffs respond with Gibbons' seventh man-up tally of the season. Siena then netted the next five goals of the game to take control of the contest, racing to an 8-2 halftime lead.

Siena continued to pour on the pressure in the second stanza, outscoring Canisius, 6-0, en route to the 14-2 victory.

The Saints finished the game with a commanding 47-25 advantage in shots on the afternoon. Danny Martinsen led Siena with seven points on four goals and three assists, while Tom Morr recorded seven saves in net in the winning effort.

Canisius returns to action next Saturday, hosting VMI on Senior Day. Game time at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 11 a.m.

Game Notes: Canisius now leads the all-time series, 17-6 ... The 12-goal margin of victory is the most for Siena (in their five previous victories in the series, the Saints won by a combined 16 goals) ... Canisius has now recorded multiple man-up goals in six-straight games ... The 12-goal loss is the biggest for Canisius in MAAC play since a 16-4 defeat to Mount St. Mary's in 2001.
