Senior attackman Simon
Giouremetakis and freshman midfielder Tim Edwards were by
recognized by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference on Monday after helping
the Canisius College men's lacrosse team to a win over Albany on Saturday.
Giourmetakis earned MAAC Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Edwards was
named the league's Rookie of the Week.
Giourmetakis led the Canisius attack in the team's win against
the Great Danes, setting career highs with eight points, six goals and two
assists. The senior recorded five points and four goals in a 9-3 second-half run
to en route to the 13-10 victory. Giourmetakis is the first Griff to record
eight points in a game since Nick LoCoco accomplished the feat against Colgate
in 2008.
With his early-season success, Giourmetakis currently ranks
16th in the country with 4.00 points per game and ninth with 3.00 goals per
game. A first-team All-MAAC selection in 2010, Giourmetakis has totaled 75
career points on 49 goals and 26 assists in 38 career games.
In his first two collegiate games, Edwards recorded five
points, two goals and three assists for the Griffs. The freshman recorded an
assist in his first career game against No. 3 Cornell, before adding four
points on his first two collegiate goals and two assists in the win over
Albany.
Giourmetakis, Edwards and the Griffs return to action on
Saturday, hosting Detroit in the team's first MAAC game of the season. Canisius
welcomes the Titans to the Demske Sports Complex with the first faceoff set for
1 p.m.
