Loyola Uses First-Half Goal To Blank Men's Soccer

The Canisius College men's soccer team posted 24 shots but couldn't net the equalizer as the Golden Griffins lost 1-0 to Loyola University at the Demske Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon. Canisius drops to 7-3-2 overall and 0-2-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

"After the first few minutes, I thought we controlled play and we had a bunch of good chances, but we just couldn't put the ball past their keeper," Canisius coach Dermot McGrane said. "Loyola scored its goal on kind of a broken play off a free kick and even until the last very few seconds, we had a chance at scoring the equalizer. You have to give Loyola credit, they are a good team, but we had some chances today and just couldn't capitalize."

Loyola (6-5-1, 1-1-0) scored the only goal of the match late in the first half as Kevin Curran sent a free kick into the box. The ball got behind the Canisius defense and went right to Gerwyn Jones, who shot one into the right side of the net and past Canisius goalkeeper Ryan Arvin for his first goal of the season.

Canisius, which outshot Loyola 24-10 in the match, made a late push in an attempt to knot the score but couldn't convert. Sophomore Asani Samuels had two of those chances, first sending a header wide with just over five minutes left. In the final seconds, a long throw-in from freshman Alex De Carolis made it all the way to the Loyola goal but the shot from Samuels was blocked by a Loyola defender.

Thurman Van Riper (6-5-1) made seven saves to pick up the win while Arvin (0-1-0) made one save in his first start of the year.

Canisius concludes its five-match homestand next weekend when the Golden Griffins host rival Niagara University on Saturday night. Game time at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 7 p.m.
