The Canisius College volleyball team rebounded with a four-set win over Marist College in the Koessler Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins defeated the Red Foxes 25-22, 27-29, 25-21, 25-18 to improve to 12-10 overall and 9-3 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Junior Sydney Palka had a career-high 63 assists in the match, setting the program record for assists in a four-set match. Senior Allyson Severyn had 29 digs on the day and set the program's career record for digs, breaking the mark of 2,095 set by Jess Stackhouse (2004-07), as Severyn now has 2,112 in her career.

Five Golden Griffins had 12 or more kills in the match, with junior Roxanne Hernandez posting a career-high 15 kills and a .522 attack percentage to go along with five blocks. Junior Emily Elek had a double-double with 14 kills and 11 assists while senior Samantha Good had 14 kills and six blocks. Senior Logan Sulongga also had 14 kills while junior Jessica Warner had 12 kills.

"Myself included, we had a bad day at the office on Saturday. I was really proud of the way we regrouped and bounced back with a win today against a Marist team that played well," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "Sydney responded especially and played her best match of the year, letting our hitters be really productive.

"I also want to congratulate Ally Severyn on her career digs record. She plays a position that doesn't get a lot of recognition and for four years she has been doing her job every day."

Each team hit above .300 in the opening set, as Canisius scored four straight points midway through the set to go up 16-14 on a kill from Elek. The Griffs would never give up the lead, winning the set on a kill from Good. Palka recorded 20 assists on 21 Canisius kills in the set.

Marist (7-15, 3-9 MAAC) fought off three set points in the second set and won the set on its own second set point to even the match at one set apiece. The Griffs built a 15-9 lead in the third set after a service ace from Elek, but the Red Foxes didn't go away quietly in the third set. Marist went on an 11-5 run, taking a 20-18 lead. The Griffs then used back-to-back kills from Elek and a block from Hernandez and Sulongga to take a 21-20 lead. After Marist tied the score at 21-21, the Griffs used back-to-back kills from Sulongga to go up 23-21 and won the set on a kill from Elek.

Canisius controlled the fourth set as the Griffs won six straight points, including three kills from Hernandez, after Marist won the opening point to take a 6-1 lead. The Griffs never led by fewer than four points the rest of the way as Palka would set the assists record on the last point of the match on an assist for a kill by Good.

Mackenzie Stephens led Marist with match highs with 20 kills and eight blocks while posting a .529 attack percentage. Katie Estes had a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs. Audra Brady recorded 46 assists and Brooke Zywick posted 24 digs.

Canisius travels to the mid-Atlantic region for two matches this weekend. The Golden Griffins play at Rider University on Saturday, with match time in Lawrenceville, N.J. set for 1 p.m.

Notes: Canisius is 9-3 for the third time since the MAAC went to a double round-robin format in 2006... Three Golden Griffins previously had 62 assists in a four-set match, most recently Lauren Lackovich against Marist on Oct. 16, 2004, against Marist... Palka's 63 assists are the most by a Golden Griffin in the rally-scoring era and are one off the program record of 64 set by Shanon Jordan against Loyola on Oct. 19, 1997... Canisius sweeps the season series from Marist for the second time in the last three seasons... Canisius improves to 34-16 in MAAC play since 2006 when posting 10 or more blocks... Palka had her third double-double of the season while Elek had her team-leading fifth in 2012... Canisius had won its previous six sets that had gone to extra points. The Griffs are now 6-2 on the season in sets that go extra points... Good moved into sixth place on the program's career kills list and now has 1,078 kills in her career.
