Canisius College sophomore Brianna Smith scored two goals, but
Colgate's Jenna Raepple hit home the game-winning strike in the 77th
minute to help lead the host Raiders to a 3-2 win in non-conference action
Sunday afternoon in Hamilton, N.Y. Canisius is now 5-4-1 on the year while
Colgate moved to 7-4-0 with the victory.
The Raiders got on the board first
in the game's first minute when Maddie Malone scored on a penalty kick to make
the score 1-0. Colgate took a 2-0 lead in the game's 23rd minute,
but the Griffs were able to cut the lead in half before intermission when
Smith, who was the MAAC's Rookie of the Year in 2010, scored unassisted in the
34th minute. Colgate outshot Canisius 15-5 in the first half and
ended the game with a 31-14 advantage.
The Blue and Gold knotted the game
at 2-2 in the 53rd minute when Smith took a pass from senior Kelly Reinwald and then beat Colgate
keeper Ashley Walsh for her third goal in the last two games. The game remained
tied at 2-2 until Raepple took a pass from teammate Caroline Brawner and beat
Canisius keeper Megan Tock for the
goal. Tock made her first start in net for the Griffs on Sunday and made eight
stops.
Canisius will return to action Friday, Sept. 30, when the team travels
to Manhattan to open MAAC play. Game time in Riverdale, N.Y. is set for 4 p.m.
