The Canisius College men's soccer team lost to Cal State Northridge on Friday night, 2-0, falling in the season opener for both teams.
Junior Kareem Gray recorded a career-best 10 shots to anchor the Canisius defense on the night, Freshman Asani Samuels led the Griffs with four shots, while classmate Derek Maier also recorded two shots in the defeat.
The Matadors took the early lead when Chris Smith scored from 30 yards out in the 26th minute of play. Christian Gonzalez then connected on a corner kick for Cal State Northridge in the 67th minute to seize the 2-0 victory.
Canisius was outshot on the night, 24-6, and the Matadors also held a 9-4 edge in corner kicks. Manabu Kaji recorded two saves to earn the shutout victory for Cal State Northridge.
The Griffs return to action on Sunday with a road contest at San Diego State. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
