Canisius College senior outfielder Lauren Hope set a new MAAC record for
career stolen bases by setting a new Canisius record for steals in a game with
six as the Golden Griffins split a conference doubleheader with Rider Saturday
afternoon in Lawrenceville, N.J. The host Broncs (9-37, 2-14 MAAC) took the
first game 4-3 before Canisius (20-21, 7-9 MAAC) rebounded to pound Rider 13-3
in six innings in the nightcap.
Hope, who entered the twinbill tied
for former Fairfield player Ellen Sarosy for the conference's career lead in
career stolen bases with 112, shattered the record by stealing six bags on the
day, which was one steal shy of tying the NCAA Division I Softball single-game
record. The Los Osos, Calif., wasted little time acquiring the record, as she
led off the first with a base hit and then advanced to second on a Rider
fielding error. Moments later, she stole third to claim the conference's
all-time steals record, and she added to that total as she stole home to give
Canisius a 1-0 lead.
Hope would steal second and third
base in the fourth after she reached via an error, but her teammates were not
able to drive her across the plate as the Blue and Gold trailed 3-1 at that
point of the game. Rider added an insurance run in the fifth to make it 4-1,
but Canisius rallied with solo tallies in the top of the sixth and seventh, but
it was not enough to lift the team to victory. Senior Paige Freiberger drew a bases-loaded walk to knock in a run in the
sixth and Hope singled through the infield in the seventh that knocked in
teammate Stephanie Pfentner. Hope,
who also stole a base in the sixth, stole second in the top half of the seventh
to move the tying run into scoring position, but Rider's Rachael Matreale was
able to work out of danger to end the game.
Matreale earned the win after she
allowed three runs on 10 hits while striking out nine and walking five.
Canisius junior Caroline Main took
the loss in the circle after she gave up four runs on eight hits while fanning
four and walking three.
Hope and Pfentner each had three
hits in the losing effort as the Griffs ended the first game by leaving 15
runners on base. Senior Emily Helbig also
recorded two hits for the Blue and Gold.
In the second game, Canisius scored
four times in the top of the first and never looked back as the Griffs ended
the 2011 season in style with a 13-3 win in six innings. The big blow in the
first, where nine Griffs marched to the plate, was Pfenter's team-leading
seventh homer of the season, a three-run shot to left, that put the team up 4-0
before Rider even came to the plate. Those runs would be more than enough for
Canisius starter Jen Consaul, as she
earned her eighth win of the season after she gave up three runs on six hits to
go with one strikeout and no walks. The Blue and Gold pounded out a season-high
15 hits in the win as six of the team's nine starters registered multi-hit
days.
Junior Lauryn Chris posted a career-high three hits in the victory, while
Pfentner ended the second game with four RBI. Freshman Valorie Nappo and junior Katie
Lancellotti had two hits as well.
