Softball Announces Schedule Changes

Canisius College softball coach Mike Rappl announced today that the Golden Griffins will take part in a split, non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 26 in Tallahassee, Fla. These two non-league games will replace the team's previously scheduled appearance in the ESPN Wide World of Sports Invitational, which was cancelled last week.

The Griffs are now scheduled to meet Florida A&M on Feb. 26, at 2 p.m., before taking on Savannah State at 4 p.m. Both teams are members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).

Florida A&M was picked to finish second in the MEAC's Southern Division in the conference's preseason poll. The Rattlers went 30-24 last season with a 7-5 mark in MEAC games. This will mark the first meeting between Canisius and Florida A&M in softball.

The Tigers of Savannah State went 18-23 overall last season and played as an independent school, with the 2011 season serving as the program's first year in the MEAC for softball. Canisius will be facing off against Savannah State for the first time in program history.

The Griffs were chosen second in the MAAC's Preseason Coaches Poll, which was released last week. The Blue and Gold will open the year Friday, Feb. 18, when the team takes on the College of Charleston and Morehead State on the first day of the College of Charleston Invitational. Canisius returns seven regular starters and two pitchers to this year's roster after going 34-19 overall and 13-3 in MAAC play a season ago.
