Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Season Ends with Loss to Iona

Third-seeded Iona scored all of its runs in the home-half of the third inning and starting pitcher Allison Hoppe allowed just three hits in a complete-game shutout, as the Gaels defeated Canisius 4-0 in an elimination game at the 2025 MAAC Softball Championship at Gartland Park in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

With the win, Iona (29-20) advances to a second elimination game on Thursday where the team will play either Fairfield or Rider at 3:45 p.m. For the Golden Griffins, they see their season come to an end with a record of 26-26.

GAME RECAP
Canisius sophomore Ella Johel reached second base with her team-leading 15th double of the season in the top-half of the first, but she was left stranded after Iona centerfielder Hannah Werth made a diving catch in shallow left center to end the Griffs' frame. That would end up being the game's only hit through the first 2.5 innings, as Canisius starter Olivia Manchester retired the first seven batters she faced on the day.

With one out in the home-half of the third, Iona's Madison Campaeu became the Gaels' first base runner after she reached with a base knock to center. Iona freshman Marylou Piazza followed Campaeu with a base hit of her own to put runners on first and second base, setting the stage for Brianna Fischer, whose three-run homer over the fence in right gave Iona a 3-0 lead. After Manchester fanned Werth for the inning's second out, Hailey Guerraro made the score 4-0 in favor of the Gaels after she hit a solo home run over the fence in left.

That run support was more than enough for Hoppe, who allowed just two hits and struck out three Canisius batters in the game's final four innings. In the fourth inning, Canisius had a pair of runners on base with one out, but Hoppe ended the Griffs' threat with a strikeout.

Johel had two of Canisius' three hits in the losing effort, while senior Alyssa Cloutier also had a base hit in the game. Manchester took the loss in the circle after she allowed four runs on four hits to go with a strikeout in 2.2 innings of work. Sophomore Liv Herrington did not give up a hit in her 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.
