Softball Doubles Up East Tennessee State

Canisius junior shortstop Katie Lancellotti went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored and fellow junior Caroline Main tossed five innings in the circle to earn her 20th career win as the Golden Griffins doubled up East Tennessee State 8-4 in softball action on the final day of the CofC Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C. The Griffs improved to 3-2 on the year with the win, while the Bucaneers slipped to 1-5 with the loss.

Junior Lizzy Gatto scored two times in the win for the Blue and Gold, as did senior Paige Freiberger, who also drove the first run of the game in the top of the first with an RBI-double to left center that allowed Lauren Hope to cross the plate. East Tennessee State took a 2-1 lead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second, but Canisius answered with two runs in the second and a single-tally in the third when Freiberger scored on a sac-fly off the bat of Gatto.

Canisius led 4-3 through 4.5 innings of action, but the Bucs knotted the game at 4-4 with a single run in the home half of the fifth. The Blue and Gold took the lead for good in the sixth when sophomore Katie Medina singled to center field, driving in teammate Lauren Falzone. Sophomore Amanda Baun came on in relief of Main, who started the game, and tossed two innings of work to earn the save. Main picked up her second win of the season and the 20th victory in her career after she allowed four runs on six hits while striking out four and walking four in five innings of work.

Baun didn't allow a hit in her two innings of work where she walked three and struck out one. The Blue and Gold added three insurance runs in the seventh when Lancellotti double to the gap in right center to drive in two runs, and she later scored on the third error of the day charged to the Bucaneers.

The Griffs will return to action Monday, Feb. 21, when the team plays two games at Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.
