The
Canisius College volleyball team rallied from a two-sets-to-one deficit and
defeated Siena College in five sets at the Alumni Recreation Center on Saturday
afternoon. The Golden Griffins won 25-18, 23-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-10 to improve
to 7-10 overall and 2-4 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Senior
Danielle Brawn led Canisius with 19
kills while senior Janelle Davis had
her second straight double-double with 43 assists and 13 digs. Junior Samantha Good had nine kills and five
blocks while senior Layne Adams had
eight kills and three blocks. Junior Allyson
Severyn totaled a match-high 26 digs while sophomore Emily Elek had seven kills and seven digs in the fourth and fifth
sets.
"We got pushed by Siena today, and it was great to see our team push back," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "We were finally able to get a five-set win, and this truly was a collective team effort."
Canisius
came out on fire, getting eight kills on its first 11 attack attempts of the
match as the Golden Griffins raced out to a 13-5 lead. After the Saints won
three of four points to make it 14-8, the Griffs got two kills from Good, along
with a service ace from the junior, to regain the eight-point lead. Canisius
didn't let Siena get closer than six points the rest of the way as the Griffs
took the opening set.
Siena
responded by taking a 17-11 lead in the second set. Canisius battled back with
a 7-1 run, which featured two kills from Brawn and a service ace from Severyn,
to tie the set at 18-18. The Saints came back by winning three straight points
and opened up a 23-20 lead. Canisius then won three straight points of its own,
capped by a service ace from Good, to even the score at 23-23. After calling a
timeout, Siena would win the final two points of the set to even the match.
Siena
won the first three points and never trailed in the third set. The Saints built
a 19-12 lead before Canisius fought its way back into the set. The Griffs used
a 7-1 run to cut the Siena lead to 21-19 after a kill from senior Layne Adams. The Saints then won four
of the last five points to take the third set and go up 2-1 in the match.
Canisius
built an early fourth-set lead, going up 9-6 on a service ace from Severyn. The Griffs got
four kills early in the set off the bench from Elek. The teams stayed close for
the rest of the set, which featured 16 ties and six lead changes. With the
score tied at 22-22, the Griffs scored the final three points, including kills
from Elek and Brawn, to force a fifth set.
Canisius
went up 9-7 in the fifth set on a kill from Adams, but the Saints then won
three straight points to go up 10-9 on a service ace. Canisius then won the
final six points of the set, which included four straight Siena attack errors,
to win the match.
Taylor
Akana led Siena (4-11, 2-5 MAAC) with a match-high 28 kills on 68 attempts, to
go along with 21 digs. Colleen Ahearn had 12 kills and six blocks while
Jacqueline Skeen had 10 kills.
Canisius
concludes the weekend road trip on Sunday, when the Golden Griffins play at
Marist. Game time at the McCann Center is set for 2 p.m.
Notes: Canisius won for the first time in five sets this season, ending a five-match losing streak in five-set matches... Canisius
won for the second consecutive year in Loudonville after ending a seven-match
losing streak at the Alumni Recreation Center in 2010... The double-double for
Davis was the 24th of her career... Brawn has double-digit kills in 17
of the last 19 matches... Severyn had two service aces for the second time in
three matches... The eight kills for sophomore Jessica Warner were the most since she had 12 against Kent State on
Sept. 13... Adams had three or more blocks for the sixth time in eight matches... Good
had five blocks for the third time in five matches.
