The Canisius College volleyball team lost in five sets to Fairfield University in the Koessler Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. The Stags defeated the Golden Griffins 19-25, 14-25, 26-24, 25-20, 15-6 as Canisius falls to 9-14 overall and 4-8 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Junior Samantha Good led Canisius with 13 kills to go along with seven blocks and two service aces while fellow middle hitter Roxanne Hernandez had 11 kills and four blocks, as the sophomore hit .474. Senior Janelle Davis had a double-double with 38 assists and 13 digs as well as six kills (on 12 attempts) and three service aces. Sophomore Jessica Warner set a career high with eight blocks while junior Allyson Severyn had 21 digs.

"We received great production from our middle hitters today, but didn't have good days from our outside hitters. That really limited our offense," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "We weren't able to close out Fairfield in the third set, and they're a confident team. They took that momentum and used it for the rest of the match."

The Griffs hit .300 or better in each of the first two sets as they pulled away in the opening set. Down 16-15, Canisius won three straight points, capped by a kill from Good on an overpass, to go up 18-16. The Stags pulled within one point on two separate occasions, but the Griffs won five of the final six points in the set to take the early 1-0 lead.

Canisius posted a team-high .435 attack percentage in the second set, easily going up 2-0 in the match. The Griffs won the first six points and never looked back. Canisius never let the Stags get closer than five points and ended the set with three consecutive blocks, each involving Warner.

Canisius seemed poised to win the match in three sets, winning nine of the opening 12 points to build a 9-3 lead after a solo block from Hernandez. The Stags then used a 7-1 run to knot the score at 10-10. The teams stayed tight throughout most of the set and a Canisius block, from Good and Warner, gave them a 23-22 lead. However, the Griffs could never get a match point, as the Stags won the next two points, winning the third set on their second set point.

Canisius bounced right back by winning the opening five points of the fourth set, but the Stags rallied quickly as they won 10 straight points to take control of the match. The Griffs could never get closer than four points in the fourth set as the Stags forced a decisive fifth set. In that fifth set, Fairfield won six of the opening seven points and posted a match-high .533 attack percentage (eight kills, zero errors, 15 attempts).

Caitlin Stapleton led Fairfield (13-9, 10-2 MAAC) with 17 kills while Lindsay Weaver had 14 kills, with both Stapleton and Weaver recording five blocks. Rachel Romansky had a double-double with 54 assists and 12 digs while Kara Reis had a match-high 22 digs.

Canisius returns to the court next weekend, when the Golden Griffins play two road matches. The weekend starts at Manhattan on Saturday, with match time set for 2 p.m.

Notes: Fairfield defeated Canisius for the third consecutive meeting... Hernandez set a career high with the 11 kills, besting her previous high of six kills... Canisius dropped to 1-4 this season in five-set matches... Davis had a double-double for the fifth time in the last eight matches and now has 27 in her career... Entering Sunday's match, Warner had 27 blocks on the season before recording her career-high eight blocks against the Stags.
