Freshman Brianna Smith and junior Kelly Reinwald scored second half goals to help lead the Canisius College women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over the Youngstown State Penguins Sunday afternoon in Youngstown, Ohio.

The Blue and Gold got off to a slow start as the Penguins drew first blood in the 33rd minute when Alison Ludwig took a pass from Shelby Parks and lofted a shot over the head of senior goalkeeper Lesley Ivinac. The score would remain 1-0 in favor of Youngstown State heading into halftime but the second half would be a different story for the Golden Griffins. Reinwald wasted no time in tying game in the 57th minute with an assist going to senior Laura Ellis. Canisius would take the lead in the 69th minute as Smith blasted a shot past the goalkeeper with assists going to freshman Katie Griffin and senior Kasey Makowski. Canisius would not look back on their way to their third win of the season.

It was a tale of two halves for the Blue and Gold as Canisius was outshot 7-0 in the first half but rebounded to out shoot the Penguins 15-2 in the second frame. Reinwald and Smith once again teamed up to provide the Griffs with offense this weekend as both scored their third goals of the weekend. Ivinac got the start in net for the Griffs and allowed one goal making five saves on the way to her third win of the season.

Canisius will return to action Friday, Sept. 17 when the team heads to Olean, N.Y. to compete against St. Bonaventure in the Puma Tournament. Game time is set for 5 p.m.

Game Notes: With the win, Canisius pushes its series record against Youngstown State to 5-2-0... After this weekend's games, six of the eight goals Canisius has scored have come from Reinwald and Smith (three each)...The Griffs earned their first road victory of the season by beating Youngstown State... Ivinac now has three wins on the season which is a personal season best.
