Drexel scored five second-half goals, including three in a 6:59 span, to earn a 5-0 victory over the Canisius College men's soccer team in the season opener for both squads.
The teams played to a scoreless first half, with Canisius outshooting the Dragons, 9-5. The second half, however, was a different story.
Drexel opened the scoring in the 56th minute when Brandon Zeller scored a sliding goal. Malcolm LeBourne and Nathan Page quickly followed to extend the Dragons lead to three by the 63rd minute. Drexel sealed the victory with a pair of goals in the game's closing minutes.
Sophomore transfer Kareem Gray started his first game with the Griffs in goal, recording five saves. Sophomore Regan Steele led the Canisius attack with four shots in the opener, including two on goal.
The Dragons outshot the Griffs in the contest, 18-14, while Canisius had the advantage in corner kicks, 8-4. Tim Washam recorded six saves for Drexel to earn the victory.
Canisius is back in action on Friday, playing at Delaware. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Game Notes: The two schools opened the season against each other for the second-straight season ... Drexel also defeated Canisius last season, 1-0 ... The Griffs fall to 13-29-4 all-time in season openers ... Of the 20 players to appear in the game for Canisius, 10 were playing in their first game with the Griffs.
