Freshman
midfielder Katie Griffin (Williamsville,
N.Y.), scored in the 99th minute of play, receiving a pass from
sister Jenny Griffin (Williamsville, N.Y.) to lift the Canisius College
Golden Griffins to 1-0 overtime win against St. Francis (Pa.) Friday night at
the Demske Sports Complex.
The two
teams played a tightly defended contest needing the extra frame to settle the
score. Griffin's game-winning tally came after a loose ball in front of the net
when Jenny Griffin slid a pass across the box to Katie and she connected with
her shot inside the far post.
"The team put
forth a great effort tonight," Canisius head coach Jim Wendling said. "We attacked and our defense played stellar. The
progress has really shown."
The win is
the first of the season for the Griffs (1-1-0), after they dropped their season
opener at La Salle Aug. 22. Meanwhile, this marks the first loss of the 2010
campaign for the visiting Red Flash (2-1-0). St. Francis was shut out for the
first time this season after scoring six goals in their first two contests.
Senior goalkeeper Lesley Ivinac
notched her first win of the season after she started the second half of the
contest and stopped four shots in 53 minutes of play.
Canisius
will return to action Sept. 3, when the Griffs travel to Akron, Ohio to face
the Akron Zips in a non-conference game. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
