Men's Lacrosse Edges Wagner, 8-7

Box Score The Canisius College men's lacrosse team defeated host Wagner, 8-7, on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Griffs improve to 4-6 on the season and 3-2 in MAAC play.

Junior Adam Jones led the Canisius attack with three points, scoring a pair of goals and adding an assist. Junior Nick LoCoco added two points on a goal and an assist and in the process, he became the 16th player in the program's history to record his 100th career point.

Senior John Minieri, junior Tom Vivian and sophomores Simon Giourmetakis, Jimmy Haney and Brendan O'Hagan rounded out the scoring for Canisius with a goal each.

Sophomore Sean Callahan anchored the Canisius defense with eight saves on the afternoon to earn the victory. Junior Drew Caldiero went perfect in faceoffs to lead the Griffs at the X, winning a career-best six restarts. Junior Mike Rautenstrauch led Canisius with seven ground balls, matching a personal high.

Canisius grabbed the early advantage when Giormetakis scored off a feed from sophomore Mike Allaire but Wagner responded with two goals of its own to take its only lead of the day, 2-1. Jones netted his first goal of the day with 1:49 left in the first to send the teams tied at two heading into the second quarter.

The Griffs controlled the second period, scoring all three goals during the frame. LoCoco and Jones both tallied unassisted goals at the 10:28 and 8:51 marks, respectively. LoCoco then found Minieri, who buried a shot to give Canisius its largest lead of the day at the intermission, 5-2.

Wagner (0-10, 0-4 MAAC) responded in the third quarter, outscoring Canisius 4-1 to tie the game. Cody Isdaner tallied the first three goals of the half but O'Hagan netted a goal off a pass from Jones as Canisius reclaimed its lead, 6-5. Isdaner added another goal with 50 ticks left in the third as the teams headed into the final period of play knotted at six.

Vivian gave the Griffs the lead just 39 seconds into the fourth quarter, scoring an unassisted goal. After Wagner tied the game, Haney gave Canisius the lead for good with an unassisted score with 7:05 left in the contest. The Griffs' defense would take it from there, not allowing a single shot on goal the rest of the way for Wagner while forcing five Seahawk turnovers.

Canisius outshot the Seahawks, 26-23, and held an 11-8 advantage in faceoffs. Isdaner led Wagner with five points and four goals, while Michael Gutkin recorded six saves in net.

Canisius is back in action on Wednesday, hosting Detroit in a MAAC matchup. Game time at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 3 p.m.
