Denver Tops Men's Lacrosse

Box Score A five-goal run in the second half led Denver to a 10-5 victory over the Canisius College men's lacrosse team on Saturday night. The Pioneers improve to 3-3 on the season with the win, while the Griffs drop to 0-3.

Sophomore Simon Giourmetakis led the Griffs with two goals, while classmate Jimmy Haney added two points on a goal and an assist. Senior Mike Benzinger and junior Adam Jones rounded out the scoring for Canisius with a goal each.

Sophomore Sean Callahan recorded 12 saves in net, while senior Matt Barkas chipped in a game-high four caused turnovers to lead the Canisius defense.

The Griffs started the contest strong, scoring the first two goals of the game. Benzinger got things rolling with his fourth goal of the season 3:53 into the contest, while Haney followed just 15 seconds later. Denver, however, would score the next four goals of the half to head into intermission with a 4-2 advantage.

Canisius pulled to within early in the second half, outscoring the Pioneers, 2-1, to start the third quarter. Jones netted his team-leading sixth goal of the season and after a Denver score, Giourmetakis tallied his first goal of the contest as the Griffs trailed, 5-4.

Denver would respond and netted the next five goals of the game to grab an insurmountable 10-4 advantage. Giourmetakis closed out the scoring with his second goal of the night with 23 seconds remaining.

The Pioneers outshot the Griffs, 42-21, on the night, including a 20-2 advantage in the third quarter. Colin Scott led Denver with five points and four goals, while Zander Buteux recorded seven saves in net to earn the victory.

Canisius opens MAAC play next weekend, playing at Mount St. Mary's. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Game Notes: The schools were meeting for the first time ... Jones has scored a goal in his last 19 games, the 13th-longest streak in the country and third-longest by a midfielder ... With his four goals through three games, Benzinger has surpassed his entire 2009 total ... Callahan matched his career high in saves in his third collegiate start.
