Duquesne Pulls Away From Women's Basketball

Duquesne scored 11 consecutive points to start the second half as the Canisius College women's basketball team lost 59-35 in the Koessler Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Griffins drop to 2-4 overall.

Freshman Jamie Ruttle had seven points and a career-high 11 rebounds while sophomore Ashley Durham had seven points as well. Junior Steph MacDonald added six points and senior Micayla Drysdale had six points - going 2-for-4 from behind the arc.

"Our offensive flow isn't very good right now and that's affecting our defensive intensity. It isn't one thing that's hurting us right now, but a number of things. I think we're a talented basketball team, but we're not doing what we need to do," Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. "Duquesne is a very good basketball team, possibly an NCAA Tournament team, but I'm not concerned about our opponents. I'm concerned about us, and we aren't getting better right now."

Duquesne made six of its first 10 shots and took an early 14-4 lead after back-to-back baskets from Wumi Agunbiade. The Griffs got consecutive baskets from freshman Jen Lennox to cut the lead to six points. Duquesne would push its lead to 10 points on two occasions, but Canisius used an 8-2 run to make it 26-23 late in the first half. Durham drained a deep 3-pointer and the Griffs got jumpers from MacDonald and Whitney Ellenor during the spurt.

Duquesne (5-1) took a 28-23 lead into the locker room and scored 11 unanswered points in the first round minutes of the second half to break the game open. A 3-pointer from Drysdale stopped the Duquesne run, but the Dukes would hold Canisius scoreless with a stretch of more than six minutes to push their lead over 20 points.

Two Duquesne players had double-doubles with Agunbiade recording 11 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks while Samantha Pollino had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Alex Gensler added 14 points, five assists and four steals.

Canisius begins a four-game road trip on Tuesday, when the Golden Griffins play at St. Bonaventure. Game time in Olean is set for 7 p.m.

Notes: Canisius extended its NCAA record of consecutive games with a 3-pointer to 491 games on a 3-pointer by Drysdale in the first half... The teams met for the sixth time and for the first time in Buffalo since Jan. 7, 1992... Ruttle is averaging 8.7 rebounds in the last three games... Drysdale is shooting 8-for-17 (47 percent) in four home games this season... MacDonald matched her career high with 34 minutes... Duquesne forced 12 second-half turnovers and scored 18 points off those 12 Canisius turnovers.
