The
Canisius College volleyball team lost in five sets to Siena College in the
Koessler Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. The Saints defeated the Golden
Griffins 21-25, 25-23, 25-20, 17-25, 17-15 as Canisius falls to 15-14 overall
and 11-6 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Sophomore
Emily Elek led Canisius with a
match-high 17 kills while senior Renee
Lettow had a season-high 16 kills. Junior Janelle Davis had her seventh double-double of the season with 36
assists and 15 digs. Sophomore Samantha
Good had 10 kills while sophomore Allyson
Severyn had 25 digs.
"I
don't think anybody can be anything but disappointed with our effort today. We
can handle execution problems, but our effort wasn't where it needs to be. That's
unacceptable," Canisius coach Cathy
Hummel said. "We went deep into our bench today and got some production
from players who haven't seen a lot of playing time, but that wasn't enough.
"We
have to bring energy against every team in this league, not just against the
teams at the top of the conference standings."
Canisius
pulled away late in the first set, winning four straight points to break open a
19-19 tie, getting kills from Good, Elek and Davis during the run. Elek's fourth
kill of the set gave Canisius the early 1-0 lead.
Siena
(7-19, 6-10 MAAC) jumped out to a 13-7 set behind a 10-1 run. Canisius then won
seven straight points, taking a 14-13 lead on a kill from Elek. The Griffs
built a 21-18 lead on a kill from junior Layne
Adams, but the Saints won five of the next six points to go up 23-22. Siena
eventually evened the match on a kill from Brianne Bobo.
The
Saints took advantage of five Canisius service errors in the third set to take
a 2-1 lead in the match. Canisius forced a fifth set by controlling the fourth
set, winning the first two points and never giving up the lead. A kill from
Davis - one of seven on the day for the Griffs' setter - gave Canisius the
fourth-set win.
Canisius
jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the fifth set behind a kill from freshman Roxanne Hernandez, but the Saints would
win five of the six points after the changeover to tie the match at 9-9.
Canisius built a 12-10 lead after a Siena service error, but the Saints won
four of the next five points to go up 14-13. A cross-court kill from Elek tied
the match at 14-14, and Siena forced another match point on a kill from
Brittany Lintelman. Another cross-court kill from Elek staved off the second
match point, but another kill from Lintelman and a kill from Bobo closed out
the match.
Freshman
Taylor Akana led Siena with 16 kills and had 16 digs to record a double-double.
Bobo also had a double-double with 15 digs and 11 kills while Sarah Sivertson
