The Canisius College men's soccer team lost to first-place Siena on Friday afternoon in MAAC action, falling by a score of 3-1. The Griffs are now 3-5-0 in conference play, while the Saints improve to 7-1-0 against MAAC foes.
The Saints found the back of the net early in the contest, scoring just 3:14 into the contest. Matt Hemsley tallied his fourth goal of the season off a pass from Joey Tavernese to give Siena the early advantage.
The Griffs answered back, scoring with 10:32 remaining in the opening half. Junior Aaron Ramos-Gonzalez scored off a free kick for the first goal of his collegiate career as the two teams headed into intermission knotted at one.
The Saints once again scored first in the second half, taking advantage of a Canisius turnover. Steve Covino scored off the Griffs turnover in the 55th minute for the 2-1 lead. Jannis Opalka sealed the victory for Siena with a goal in the 86th minute of play.
Siena had a slight advantage in shots, 14-11, and corner kicks, 6-4, on the afternoon. Sophomore Kareem Gray recorded four saves for the Griffs, while Phil Chabot stopped two shots for the Saints in the victory.
Canisius wraps up the 2010 season on Sunday with a road contest at Marist. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
