Volleyball Defeats Saint Peter?s

After dropping the first set and facing a 24-22 deficit in the second set, the Canisius College volleyball team fought off four set points to win the set and eventually defeat Saint Peter's 22-25, 29-27, 25-12, 25-18 in the Koessler Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins improve to 13-12 overall and 9-4 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Sophomore Emily Elek led the Griffs with 13 kills and recorded 14 digs to post her second double-double of the season. Senior Renee Lettow added 10 kills while senior Jasmine Brennan had a career-high eight kills and four blocks while hitting .400 in the match. Junior Janelle Davis had 38 assists and 17 digs for her fifth double-double of the year while sophomore Allyson Severyn had a match-high 22 digs.

"It's critical to get contributions from a number of players on the court. We were struggling early, but found a way to win that second set," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "We carried that momentum to the third set and controlled the rest of the match."

Saint Peter's (6-17, 2-10 MAAC) won the final three points of the first set - capped by a kill from Stephanie Phillips to take the early lead in the match. Canisius built a 21-18 lead in the second set, but Saint Peter's went on a 6-1 run to take a 24-22 lead and have two set points. Canisius got kills from sophomore Samantha Good and Lettow to tie the match at 24-24. The Griffs eventually won the set on a kill from freshman Lindsay Hanggi, who was playing the front row after Canisius had used all of its substitutions in the second set.

Canisius dominated the third set, jumping out to an 11-1 lead and never looking back. The Griffs won nine points on the serve of Elek, who had two service aces during the stretch. Brennan had three kills on three attempts while Canisius hit .391 in the set.

Canisius jumped out to an 18-5 lead in the fourth set, winning 10 of 11 points to build the big lead. Junior Danielle Brawn had two service aces during the run. The Peahens mounted a late rally, but a kill from Davis - her sixth of the day - closed out the match.
