VMI Rallies Past Men's Lacrosse on Senior Day

Box Score The Canisius College rallied from a three-goal fourth-quarter deficit by scoring five consecutive goals, but VMI answered by scoring the final three goals of the game to defeat the Golden Griffins 12-11 on Senior Day at the Demske Sports Complex on Saturday.

Canisius sees its season come to an end with a 4-9 overall record and 3-5 record in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Sophomore Adam Jones led Canisius with a career-high six goals in the game as five other Golden Griffins recorded one goal in the contest. Sophomore Nick LoCoco had six assists on the day.

VMI took a 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter when Tim Moran closed the quarter with two goals in the final 3:19 for the Keydets.

Canisius responded by scoring four goals in the second quarter, including two in a span of 16 seconds. Jones scored his second of the day 30 seconds in the quarter and then off the faceoff, Canisius went down the field and junior Matt Barkas fired a shot to tie the game at 4-4.

After the Keydets made it 5-4, the Griffs scored the final two goals of the period. Both goals were from Jones with his fourth of the day coming with 2:35 left in the half to give Canisius a 6-5 halftime lead.

VMI (3-11, 2-6) held Canisius scoreless for a span of 20 minutes, 30 seconds, scoring four consecutive goals to take a 9-6 lead early in the fourth quarter. Canisius responded by scoring five goals in less than six minutes.

The run was started by the first collegiate goal from freshman Mike Allaire. After Jones cut the VMI lead to one goal, freshman Jon Domres scored his first collegiate goal to tie the game at 9-9 with 8:17 remaining.

Freshman Jimmy Haney gave Canisius a 10-9 lead with 7:16 left. The Griffs struck again quickly, with Jones and LoCoco hooking up for the fifth time in the game, making the score 11-9.

The Keydets cut the Canisius lead to one goal just 23 seconds later on a goal from Matt Piazza. Moran then scored his fourth and fifth goals of the day to give VMI the win. The first goal came in a man-up situation with 3:30 left, and Moran scored the gamewinner with 54 seconds remaining on a shot in the bottom-right corner.

Senior Bryan Jack made 11 saves and took the loss for the Griffs in net while Sean McCoy made nine saves for VMI to earn the win.

Game Notes: The previous career high for Jones was four goals, which happened on three occasions... LoCoco had six assists in a game for the second time this season as the sophomore had six assists against Mount St. Mary's on April 4... Mike Rautenstrach recorded his first assist of the season after recording two as a freshman in 2008... Canisius lost to VMI for the first time in seven matchups and for the first time at the Demske Sports Complex since 1991.
