Box Score Siena used a 6-1 second-half run to pull away from the Canisius College men's lacrosse team and remain the lone unbeaten in MAAC play, posting a 12-9 victory over the Griffs. The Saints improve to 7-5 on the season and 5-0 in conference play, while Canisius falls to 3-7 and 2-4 in the MAAC.
Freshman Jimmy Haney led the Griffs with a career-best four goals, while sophomore Nick LoCoco also chipped in four points, registering a goal and three assists. Sophomore Adam Jones added two scores, while juniors Matt Barkas and John Minieri each tallied a goal.
Senior Bryan Jack posted 11 saves in net. Freshman Justin Maderer enjoyed a career day at the faceoff X, winning 8-of-10 faceoffs and picking up a career-best seven ground balls.
The Saints opened the contest quickly, taking just 56 seconds to find the back of the net. Siena then added its second goal at the 2:18 mark before LoCoco got the Griffs on the scoreboard. Siena reclaimed its two-goal advantage but the Griffs responded with three-consecutive scores to take their first lead of the afternoon, 4-3. Haney sparked the Canisius run with a man-up goal and was followed by Jones and Minieri. The Saints knotted the game with just eight seconds left in the opening quarter as the two teams headed into the second tied at four.
Haney helped the Griffs reclaim their lead with his second goal of the afternoon 1:39 into the second stanza. However, Siena would hold Canisius scoreless for the remainder of the half and added two goals to take a 6-5 lead into the third quarter.
Haney once again opened the scoring in the third quarter, knotting the game at six and completing his first collegiate hat trick. The Saints, however, would respond with their 6-1 run to put the game out of reach, 12-7. Jones and Haney both scored man-down goals in the closing minutes but time would run out on Canisius.
The Saints held a slight edge in shots, 32-29, but Canisius had a 39-28 advantage in ground balls. The Griffs also won 17-of-25 faceoffs in the game.
Bryan Neufeld led the Saints with four points on three goals and an assist. Brent Herbst recorded 11 saves in net to earn the victory.
Canisius returns to action on Saturday, playing at Manhattan in MAAC contest. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
Game Notes: Canisius has played Siena more than any other team in the program's history. The Griffs now hold a 17-3 advantage in the all-time series ... The home team has won the last four games in the series ... Canisius was returning to Loudonville, N.Y. for the first time since winning the MAAC Championship there last year ... Freshman Travis Gibbons recorded his first collegiate point with an assist on Haney's goal ... LoCoco moved into eighth place in school history with 57 career assists, passing Scott Ronson, who recorded 55 assists from 194 to 1997.
