Baseball Plays Four in North Carolina This Weekend

Baseball Bounces Back with 18-0 Rout of Marist



The Canisius College baseball team scored three runs in the second inning and never looked back en route to an 18-0 victory over Marist at the Demske Sports Complex on Sunday. The win improves the Golden Griffins' record to 12-13 overall and 1-2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Five Golden Griffins had at least two hits and 12 players recorded at least one hit on the day. Junior Ian Choy was 3-for-3 and matched his career high with four RBIs. Senior Kevin Mahoney had two solo homers in the game, giving him 11 for the season. Junior Paul Panik scored two runs and matched his career high with three RBIs, Steve McQuail was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and Kevin Mailloux was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Junior Mike Goemans went seven scoreless innings, allowing four hits and four walks while striking out four. Goemans faced 27 batters in his seven innings of work.

Mahoney started the Canisius scoring with an opposite-field solo homer to lead off the bottom of the second. Shayne Willson followed with a single and McQuail had a ground-rule double to put runners at second and third. Choy followed with a two-RBI single to make it 3-0.

The Griffs batted around in the third, scoring five runs on four hits and using three Marist errors. Willson, Choy and Alec Cabello had RBI singles in the inning while McQuail had an RBI groundout and Panik had a sacrifice fly to make it 8-0.

The Griffs added six more runs in the fourth, sending 11 batters to the plate. Mailloux hit a one-out homer to center. Choy had another RBI single, Panik brought a run home by being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Perry Silverman had a two-RBI single. The sixth Canisius run of the inning scored when Brian Gibbs beat out a single to third and the throw went out of play, scoring Panik.

Mahoney hit his second homer of the day in the fifth, a solo homer to center. Panik had an RBI double in the sixth while Mailloux brought home a run with an RBI groundout. The last Canisius run came in the eighth on an RBI groundout from Jon VanRemmen.

Goemans (3-1) only allowed Marist (12-9, 5-1) to get a player to second base in two innings and to third base in one inning. The Red Foxes loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth with three consecutive singles to start the inning. Goemans then got a strikeout, pop out and groundout to get out the jam unscathed.

Five Red Foxes pitched in the game with B.J. Martin (1-3) taking the loss by allowing six runs, four earned, in 2.1 innings of work.

Canisius is scheduled for one non-conference game this week, as the Golden Griffins host Le Moyne on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Game Notes: The game started after a two-hour rain delay... The 18 runs are the a season-high for the Griffs and most since they scored 24 against St. Bonaventure on April 9, 2008... The 18-0 victory is the biggest winning margin in a MAAC game for Canisius in program history, besting the previous mark of a 16-4 victory over Niagara on May 6, 1995... Choy has now raised his average to .327 after hitting .160 on March 15... Mahoney extended his hitting streak to 13 games, matching his career long... Choy also had four RBIs on March 30, 2008, against Iona... Panik had three RBI against Tennessee Tech on March 3, 2007.
