Box Score The Canisius College men's lacrosse team lost its third-straight one-goal game, falling at Providence on Saturday, 5-4. The Griffs are now 0-6 on the season and 0-3 in the MAAC, while the Friars improve to 4-4 and 3-0 in league play.
Sophomore Adam Jones led the Griffs with three points, scoring two goals and adding an assist. Junior Mike Benzinger and freshman Simon Giourmetakis also scored, while sophomore Nick LoCoco paced the Canisius attack with two assists.
Senior Bryan Jack recorded five saves in net to anchor the Canisius defense. Junior Tim Rowley won 9-of-10 faceoffs on the afternoon and led the Griffs with eight ground balls.
Giourmetakis opened the scoring for the Griffs, tallying his fifth goal of the season with an unassisted tally 3:14 into the contest. The Friars answered with two goals of their own to head into the second quarter with a 2-1 advantage.
Canisius responded with two-straight goals to open the second period to take a 3-2 lead. Jones notched his first goal of the afternoon with the extra-man advantage and then added his second goal of the day as the Griffs reclaimed the lead. Providence scored the final goal of the half as the two teams headed into intermission knotted at three.
The Friars scored the lone goal of the third period and then stretched their lead to two 4:39 into the fourth quarter to grab a 5-3 lead. Benzinger cut the Griffs' deficit to one with 6:02 left in the game, scoring his first goal of the season with the extra-man advantage. Rowley would win the ensuing faceoff but Providence's Robert Bryan recorded his 16th save of the afternoon to give the Friars possession. Canisius regained possession but with 30 seconds left in the game, Providence forced a turnover to hold on for the victory.
Canisius outshot the Friars 27-19, including a 20-10 advantage in shots on goal. The Griffs also won the battle on faceoffs, 10-2, and on ground balls, 23-15.
Canisius returns to action on Saturday with a home contest against Mount St. Mary's. Game time at the Demske Sports Complex is scheduled for noon.
