Box Score Marist tallied two goals in the final minute of regulation and then scored 1:07 into overtime to defeat the Canisius men's lacrosse team on Saturday, 7-6.
Sophomore Adam Jones led the Griffs with four goals, while freshman Simon Giourmetakis notched Canisius' other two scores. Sophomore Nick LoCoco also added an assist.
Senior Bryan Jack recorded eight saves in net, while junior Matt Barkas led the Griffs with seven ground balls and five caused turnovers.
The Griffs (0-4, 0-1 MAAC) started the game strong defensively, allowing only two shots on goal in the first half and jumping to a 2-0 halftime advantage. Giourmetakis scored both of Canisius' goals in the first period to give the Griffs the early lead.
Marist (1-2, 1-0 MAAC) scored two goals 36 seconds apart to open the third period but the Griffs responded with three scores of their own. Jones tallied two unassisted goals and then finished the run off a feed from LoCoco to give Canisius a 5-2 lead.
The Red Foxes would cut the Canisius advantage to one, 5-4, with just under seven minutes remaining in regulation. However, Jones would give the Griffs a two-goal lead with 1:22 left in the game, recording his fourth score of the afternoon.
Marist won the ensuing faceoff and after a timeout, Corey Zindel scored with 54 seconds left to cut the Griffs' lead to one, 6-5. Following the goal, Canisius won the faceoff and held the ball until 20 seconds left before Marist forced a turnover and raced down the field. Ryan Sharkey then found the back of the net with nine seconds remaining in regulation to force the extra session.
The Red Foxes won the only faceoff in overtime and scored on their fourth shot of the extra session to earn their first victory of the season. Zindel led Marist with five goals, including the overtime winner. Ryan Penner recorded 12 saves in net to earn the victory.
Canisius is back in action next Saturday, hosting Saint Joseph's at the Demske Sports Complex. The Griffs home opener is set to begin at 1 p.m.
Game Notes: The home team has won 14 of the 16 games in the series ... Canisius has not won at Marist since the 1992 season ... The Griffs lost their MAAC opener for the first time since the 2003 season, ending a five-year winning streak ... LoCoco extended his scoring streak to 20 games, the ninth-longest streak in the country. He is now tied for 11th in the school's record book with his 41st career assist ... Jones has recorded at least a hat trick in 13-of-20 career games.
