Box Score The fourth-ranked Big Red defeated the Canisius men's lacrosse team on Tuesday afternoon, 14-4. Canisius lost its third-straight game to a nationally-ranked opponent to fall to 0-3 on the season, while Cornell improves to 3-1.
Freshman Jimmy Haney led the Griffs attack with two goals, while sophomore Nick LoCoco added two points with a goal and an assist. Sophomore Adam Jones rounded out the scoring for Canisius with one goal.
Senior Bryan Jack stopped a season-best 12 saves in net. Junior defender Matt Barkas led the Griffs with eight ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Cornell won the opening faceoff of the game and raced down the field to open the scoring five seconds into the contest. The Big Red added another goal before Haney scored off a feed from LoCoco to cut the deficit to one. Cornell added another goal to head into the second quarter, leading 3-1.
The Big Red stretched its lead to 5-1 and was then able to take advantage of a three-minute illegal equipment penalty on the Griffs, scoring three times with the extra-man advantage. In total, Cornell outscored Canisius, 6-0, in the second frame.
Cornell scored the first two goals of the second half to stretch its lead to 11-1 but the Griffs answered with three-consecutive goals. Haney, Jones and LoCoco all tallied unassisted scores to cut the Big Red's lead to seven, 11-4. However, Cornell scored all three goals in the fourth quarter of play to seal its victory, 14-4.
John Glynn and Max Seibald led the Big Red with three goals apiece. Kyle Harer started in net for Cornell, recording seven saves and allowing four goals, while Jake Myers stopped all three shots he faced.
Canisius returns to the field on Saturday, opening MAAC play at Marist. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
