Warner Carries Women's Basketball to Overtime Win Over Saint Peter?s

Senior Marie Warner scored 23 points and grabbed a career-high 21 rebounds as the Canisius College women's basketball team defeated Saint Peter's 70-64 in overtime at the Koessler Athletic Center on Friday evening. Warner tied the program record for most rebounds in a game since Canisius went to the Division I level and is the first Golden Griffin to have at least 20 points and 20 rebounds in a game since Nicole Arlain had 25 points and 20 rebounds at Siena Jan. 21, 1996.

Canisius improves to 16-5 overall and 8-2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference as the Griffs have won four straight and 14 of their last 16 games.

“We wanted to force Saint Peter's into making jump shots and that's what they did in the second half, especially late in regulation,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “We stayed true to our principles in overtime and were rewarded.”

Senior Amanda Cavo had 17 points, including a 9-for-9 performance at the free-throw line as Canisius was 30-for-40 as a team. Junior Brittan? Russell had 14 points, four assists and three steals.

Canisius jumped out to a 24-9 first-half lead before Saint Peter's battled back. The Peahens whittled the Canisius lead down to three points at the half as they ended the half on a 15-3 run.

The Peahens took their first lead of the game on a layup from Tania Kennedy with 16:18 remaining in the half to make the score 31-29. Canisius regained the lead on a 3-pointer from Brianna Lucas that made the score 38-35 and ignited a 7-0 Canisius run.

The Griffs pushed their lead to as many as nine in the second half, going up 50-41 on two free throws from Warner. The Peahens tied the game at 58-58 on a 3-pointer from Kennedy at 1:22. Each team would score twice in the final minute before turning the ball over in the final 10 seconds.

In overtime, Canisius scored eight of its 10 points from the free-throw line. With the score 61-60, Russell drove the lane and found an open Ellie Radke, who made the layup to put Canisius up 63-60. The Griffs were 7-for-8 from the free-throw line in the final two minutes of overtime to put the game away.

Kennedy led Saint Peter's (6-13, 3-7) with 19 points while Sakara House and Jamie Smith each had 11 points.

Canisius concludes its weekend homestand on Sunday, when the Golden Griffins host Rider. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
