Lamothe Selected in NLL Draft

Former Canisius lacrosse standout Eric Lamothe (St. Catharines, Ontario) will continue his career in the National Lacrosse League. The defender was selected with the 55th overall pick in the fifth round of the NLL Draft on Sunday, being picked by the Calgary Roughnecks.

"I am on cloud nine right now," Lamothe said. "I am so excited and so honored. My whole life, I have dreamed about being drafted and now it has happened. It is an unreal feeling."

Lamothe played in 47 games during his career with the Griffs, staring 20 contests as a defender. He recorded 45 ground balls and won 14 faceoffs during his tenure, which included Canisius' first-ever MAAC Championship, a NCAA Tournament appearance in 2008 and two MAAC regular-season championships.

The St. Catharines, Ontario native will join a Calgary team that advanced to the Western Conference Championship, before bowing out to Portland.

"I think going to Calgary is a great fit for me," Lamothe said. "They were looking for a lefty defender and I am a lefty defender. I think it is a great match and I couldn't be happier."

Lamothe joins a long list of Griffs to be drafted. Kevin Ross was selected with the 12th overall pick last season and Brad Favero was selected with the 60th overall pick. Other Canisius first-round selections include Mark Miyashita, who was the first overall pick in the 2003 draft, plus Matt Vinc and Dan Carey, who were picked with the sixth and seventh selections, respectively, in the 2005 draft.

"Canisius really helped me mature as a player and as a person," Lamothe said. "Playing four years at the Division I level helped to elevate my game. Coach Mearns has been there before and he gave me tips and helped me get to this point."
