Buffalo Defeats Men's Soccer

The Canisius College men's soccer team lost to cross-town rival Buffalo on Wednesday night, falling 3-0 in front of 784 fans at the Demske Sports Complex The loss drops the Griffs to 2-5-1 on the season.

“It's tough to get in the flow of the game when you make simple mistakes,” said Canisius head coach Jim Hesch. “We'll spend the next couple days getting back to the basics and hopefully be ready to play on Sunday.”

The Bulls (7-2-1) came out strong from the opening whistle. Dan Bulley headed a ball into the back of the net just 3:03 into the game to give Buffalo the early lead. Justin Fredsell stretched the Bulls advantage to two when a blocked shot deflected back to him and he fired the ball in for the score in 24th minute.

Buffalo added a third goal in the game's 53rd minute when Mateo Escobar dribbled through the Canisius defense and beat the Griffs goalie one-on-one.

Freshman Adam Miller matched a career high with five saves in goal for the Griffs. Buffalo's Robert Shuttleworth recorded two saves to earn the victory.

The Griffs return to action on Sunday, traveling to Moon Township, Pa. to face Robert Morris. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.

Game Notes: The two teams met for the 37th time in the all-time series ... Canisius has played only Niagara (48 tims) and St. Bonaventure (40 times) more than Buffalo ... Hesch's brother, Dave, is the associate head coach for the Bulls.
