Canisius College junior forward Meagan Jones scored in the game's 24th minute and freshman goalkeeper Caroline Robert made three saves in net as the Golden Griffins played to a 1-1 tie at cross-town rival Buffalo Friday night at UB Stadium. The tie allows Canisius to continue its best start in school history at 3-0-2, while the Bulls moved to 4-0-1 after the double-overtime contest.
Jones tallied the first goal of the game unassisted after she got around three Buffalo defenders and beat UB keeper Amy Coron one-on-one. The goal was the second of the season for Jones, and it also ended UB's season-long shutout streak at 384:01.
Robert made all three of her saves in the overtime periods, but the highlight of her night may have been when she forced UB forward Brooke McCalla to miss the cage wide left in the game's closing moments.
“You should be disappointed when you don't win, but I'm not," Canisius coach Jim Wendling said. "We played really hard. This was our best performance
since we came back from South Carolina. We were two equal teams and we came
away with a tie.”
The Bulls' only goal came from leading scorer Lindsey Bailey in the 55th minute. Bailey's goal was her fifth of the season, with the assist being credited to teammate Aubrey Stahl.
Canisius ended the game with a 12-8 advantage in shots, with 11 of those shots coming in regulation time. Each team was credited with five corner kicks.
The Blue and Gold will return to action Sunday, Sept. 14, when the team plays host to St. Francis (Pa.). Gametime at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 1 p.m.
