Box Score Providence defeated the Canisius men's lacrosse team, 11-5, at the Demske Sports Complex. The two teams both earned a share the regular-season MAAC title with identical 7-1 records in MAAC play. The Friars earned the MAAC Championship's top seed due to head-to-head the tie breaker.
The second-seeded Griffs will open the MAAC Championship with the third-seeded Manhattan Jaspers. Canisius defeated Manhattan 10-5 during their regular-season meeting.
Freshman Adam Jones led the Griffs with three goals, while junior Justin Rychlicki (pictured) and sophomore Michael Benzinger each added a score.
Senior Chris Courteau posted seven saves in net. Sophomore Tim Rowley was solid once again at the X, winning 9-of-11 faceoffs, while Rowley and sophomore Matt Barkas picked up a team-best six ground balls.
The Friars scored the first two goals of the game but Jones tallied his first goal of the day with just five seconds left in the first period. Rychlicki then knotted the game at two with his second score of the season just 50 seconds into the second frame. However, the Friar defense kept the Griffs off the board for the remainder of the half and added two scores to head into intermission with a 4-2 advantage.
Jones scored his third goal of the game 1:36 into the third period to bring the Griffs (8-5, 7-1 MAAC) within one. However, that was as close as Canisius would get. Providence scored two goals 47 seconds apart to claim a three goal advantage. After Benzinger brought the Griffs back within two, Providence would add two more scores. Jones tallied his third goal of the day with just one second left in the period as the two teams headed into the fourth with Providence leading, 8-5. The Friars scored all three goals in the fourth quarter en route to the victory.
Canisius and the Jaspers will square off on Friday on the campus of Siena. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
Game Notes: The loss ended the Griffs' 12-game conference winning streak at home. Their last defeat against a MAAC foe was against Mount St. Mary's during the 2005 season ... Jones tallied his eighth hat trick of the season, one shy of the school record ... Freshman Nick LoCoco recorded an assists and raised his season total to 31. His 31 assists are the second-most in school history, trailing only Randy Mearns, who posted 49 in 1990.
