Men's Lacrosse's Winning Streak Snapped By Hobart

Box Score

The Canisius College men's lacrosse team had its school-record eight-game winning streak snapped by Hobart, 10-3, in front of 1,058 fans at the Demske Sports Complex. The Griffs are now 8-4 overall, while the Statesmen improve to 7-5.

Senior Chris Courteau (pictured) anchored a strong defensive showing by the Griffs, recording 15 saves, including 10 in the second period to help keep the Griffs in the contest.

Sophomore Matt Barkas scored his first collegiate goal, while senior Michael Blocho and freshman Nick LoCoco each added a score.

The Griffs scored just seven seconds into the game when Barkas tallied a goal off a faceoff victory. However, scores were few and far between after the sophomore's first collegiate goal. Canisius dominated possession early on, recording nine shots before Hobart had one, but the Griffs could not add another score. The Statesmen finally broke through and tallied three first-period goals.

Hobart dominated possession in the second period but Courteau played strong and kept the Griffs in the game. The senior stopped the first 10 shots on goal during the period but Hobart finally broke through and added two late goals head into intermission with a 5-1 advantage. The Statesmen outshot the Griffs 17-0 in the second frame.

The Statesmen added two more goals to stretch its lead to six before LoCoco finally scored for the Griffs with 2:10 left in the third period, ending a 42:43 drought. Hobart scored to take an 8-2 advantage and then added two empty-net goals when Courteau and the Griffs were challenging the ball. Blocho also added a goal at the 2:01 mark for his 20th score of the season.

The Griffs dominated play at the faceoff X, winning 11-of-16 faceoffs, and held a 30-17 advantage in ground balls but still could not get the offense going. Sophomore Tim Rowley won 10-of-13 battles at the X and picked up a team-best six ground balls. Barkas matched Rowley with six ground balls.

Canisius returns to conference play on Saturday, hosting Providence in a key MAAC contest. The Griffs can clinch the number one seed for the conference championship and the outright MAAC regular-season title with a win. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 11 a.m.

Game Notes: Courteau's 15 saves matched his best total as a Griff ... Canisius' eight-game winning streak was twice as long as the previous school record ... Sophomore Dan Coates recorded his first collegiate point, posting an assist on Blocho's goal ... Canisius fell to 0-9 all-time against Hobart.
