Men's Lacrosse Doubles Wagner, 16-8

Box Score

The Canisius College men's lacrosse team extended its school-record winning streak to six games with a 16-8 victory over Wagner. The win improves the Griffs to 6-3 overall and a perfect 5-0 in conference play.

“It was a nice all-around game today,” said Canisius head coach Randy Mearns. “We played solid on both the offensive and defensive side today. Our offense was able to move the ball well and get some good looks. We gave Wagner some transition opportunities but overall, it was a nice win.”

Freshmen Adam Jones and Greg Michael led a balanced Griffs' offense with four points each, recording a hat trick and adding an assist. Seniors Michael Blocho and Tom Hensel each added three points on a pair of goals and an assist.

Freshman Drew Caldiero (pictured) netted his first two collegiate goals, while sophomore James McCready also tallied his first career goal. Rounding out the scoring for the Griffs were seniors Dan McAuliffe and Dave Schaefer and sophomore Michael Benzinger.

Senior Chris Courteau started the game in goal for the Griffs and recorded six saves during three quarters of play. Senior Patrick Kaczmarczyk made his first collegiate appearance, playing in the fourth quarter and recording three saves.

Sophomore Tim Rowley had his best game of the season at the X, winning 12-of-17 faceoffs and recording a game-high seven ground balls.

Jones opened the scoring for the Griffs with his first score of the afternoon 4:19 into the game. The freshman, who tallied his sixth hat trick of the season, netted the goal off a feed from Hensel. Hensel then followed with a goal and Blocho also scored to give Canisius an early 3-0 advantage. Wagner scored with 4:19 left in the first period to get on the scoreboard but Hensel and Blocho would each tally their second goals of the day just 10 seconds apart as Canisius ended the first period with a 5-1 advantage.

Wagner (0-10, 0-4 MAAC) opened the second period with two goals to cut the Griffs lead to two, 5-3. However, Canisius scored the next five goals to head into intermission with a commanding 10-3 advantage. Michael tallied three points and two goals during the decisive run, while Jones, Caldiero and Schaefer also scored for the Griffs. The Griffs outscored the Seahawks 6-5 in the second half en route to the eight-goal victory.

“It was a nice win but now we have to get ready for a hungry Siena team on Wednesday,” Mearns said.

The Griffs can lock up a spot in the MAAC Championship with a win in its next game. Canisius welcomes Siena to the Demske Sports Complex on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. contest.
