The Canisius College softball team went 1-1 Friday on the first day of the UMBC "Dawg Pound" Classic, hosted by UMBC in Baltimore, Md. The Golden Griffins (3-1) fell to Brown 8-2 in the first game of the day before bouncing back to drop Central Connecticut State 5-4 in the nightcap.
In the win over the Blue Devils (0-1), Canisius trailed 4-3 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, but plated two runs to secure the victory. Trailing 3-0 in the top of the fifth, Central Connecticut State's Jen Logan gave the Blue Devils a 4-3 lead after she yard a grand slam.
Canisius rallied in the bottom of the fifth frame, knotting the game at 4-4 after Ashley Bonetto grounded out in the infield on a play that scored senior Katie Miranto, who started the inning with a walk. Moments later, Canisius took the lead for good after junior Rachelle Barrientos (right) drilled a base hit back up the middle to plate the winning tally.
Junior Mallory Adlred came on in relief and secured her first win of the season in the circle after she tossed 2.2 innings of hitless ball where she fanned two. The Griffs jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning when Cameron Norton drew a walk with the bases loaded for an RBI and sophomore Michelle Fridey drove in two runs with a 2-run single. Freshman Lauren Hope went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored, while Miranto finished the day going 1-for-1 with two runs scored.
In the first game, Miranto put Canisius on the scoreboard first with an RBI-double, but Brown wasted little time answering with four runs over the game's first three innings. Lindsay Morris took the loss for the Blue and Gold after she went three innings in the circle, allowing four runs on five hits with four walks. Ashley Bonetto drove in a run with a double to serve as Canisius' other run in the loss to Brown (2-3).
Canisius will meet return to action Saturday with games against Delaware State at 9:30 a.m., and host UMBC at 1:30 p.m.
