No. 9 Cornell Tops Men's Lacrosse

Box Score The Canisius College men's lacrosse team lost to ninth-ranked Cornell, 14-3, Wednesday afternoon in Ithaca, N.Y. The Griffs fell to 0-3 on the season, while the Big Red improved to 3-1.

Turnovers and faceoffs proved to be the Achilles heel for the Griffs against the Big Red. Canisius committed 23 turnovers, compared to recording just 18 shots, and won only 5-of-21 faceoffs.

Seniors Tom Hensel and Dan McAuliffe (pictured) plus freshman Adam Jones each recorded a goal for the Griffs. Freshman Nick LoCoco also added an assist for Canisius.

The Griffs' goalkeepers played solid in net. Senior Chris Courteau recorded 13 saves in the first three periods of play, while junior Bryan Jack stopped two shots in the fourth quarter.

The Big Red scored the game's opening goal but the Griffs answered right back when McAuliffe scored off a feed from LoCoco. Cornell scored the next four goals but Canisius was able to pull within two, 5-3, after Hensel and Jones both netted goals. However, the Big Red scored the final goal of the first half to head into intermission with a 6-3 advantage and then scored all eight goals of the second stanza to earn the victory.

Cornell outshot the Griffs, 50-18, and held a 36-18 advantage in ground balls. Chris Finn led the Big Red with four points on three goals and an assists, while Ryan Hurley also added a hat trick. Jake Myers made seven saves in goal, while allowing only three scores.

The Griffs return to the field on Saturday, opening conference play at Mount St. Mary's. Game time for the MAAC opener is set for 2 p.m.
