Loewen and Conacher Earn Atlantic Hockey Weekly Honors

Sophomore goalie Andrew Loewen and freshman forward Cory Conacher (pictured) led the Griffs to three points in a two-game series against Bentley and for their efforts, the duo was recognized by the Atlantic Hockey. Loewen picked up Goalie of the Week honors for the third time this season, while Conacher was named the league's Rookie of the Week.

Loewen anchored a strong defensive performance during the weekend. The sophomore stopped 69-of-71 shots during the series to record a goals against average of 0.96 and a save percentage of .972. In the opener, Loewen stopped 33 shots, including four in overtime, to help the Griffs to a 1-1 draw. During the series finale, Loewen recorded 36 saves and only losing his stick while playing a puck behind the net kept him from recording his second shutout of the season.

The Winnipeg, Manitoba native has been impressive in his last seven outings. He has posted a goals against average of 2.08 and a save percentage of .942 while leading the Griffs to a 3-1-3 record. During the stretch, Loewen has averaged 34.7 saves per game. For the season, Loewen has recorded a goals against average of 2.96 and a save percentage of .911.

The weekly honor is the third for Loewen this season, tying him for most this year with RIT''s Louis Menard. Loewen first earned the accolade on Nov. 12 after stopping 28-of-30 shots against Holy Cross. He then duplicated the feat after the series against Atlantic Hockey-leading Air Force. Against the Falcons, Loewen registered 72 saves against the league's top-scoring team, leading the Griffs to two draws. He was also named the Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week once during his freshman campaign.

Conacher scored a goal and added an assist in Canisius' 4-1 victory against Bentley on Saturday. He opened the scoring for the Griffs with his first collegiate goal during the first period. The rookie then added an assist on a power-play score to round out the scoring for Canisius. Conacher, who is the youngest player competing in Division I this season, has posted four points (1g, 3a) in his first three collegiate games. He is the first Griff to record four points in his first three games since Michael Cohen during the 2003-04 season.

Loewen, Conacher and the Griffs return to the ice this weekend for a pair of Atlantic Hockey games against Connecticut. The two teams square off at the Amherst Pepsi Center on Friday and Saturday, beginning at 7:05 p.m.
