Siena Shoots Past Women's Basketball

ALBANY, N.Y. ? Siena got 67 points from the trio of Melissa Manzer, Shondaya Burrell and Laura Menty en route to defeating the Canisius College women's basketball team 78-65 Sunday afternoon at the Times Union Center.

Amanda Cavo led the Griffs with 18 points while Brittan? Russell had 17 points and shot 5-of-10 on 3-pointers in the contest while dishing out six assists. Freshman Micayla Drysdale added 10 points for the Griffs (6-8, 1-2 MAAC).

Both teams started out by making four of their first five shots with Siena (5-8, 1-2) holding a 10-8 lead just over four minutes into the game. The Griffs then scored the next 12 points, getting seven from Cavo during the run to take a 20-10 lead with 12:50 left in the half.

The Saints got back into the game with a 14-2 run, getting three 3-pointers from Manzer during the run, and made the score 30-29 on a layup by Heather Stec. The Griffs then scored the last five points of the half, a layup by Ellie Radke and 3-pointer from Micayla Drysdale to take a 35-29 lead at the half.

Siena started the second half by making its first six shots and eventually built a 49-46 lead on a layup by Stec. A 3-pointer by Cavo at the 11-minute mark ended a scoring drought of four and a half minutes for the Griffs and tied the game at 49-49.

The Saints established a nine-point lead with a 12-3 run, getting five points from Laura Menty and Manzer to hold a 61-52 advantage. Canisius could never get closer than nine points the rest of the way as the Saints made 12-of-12 free throws in the last three minutes to ice the game.

“We let Manzer get hot in the first half and then Burrell got going in the second half,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “When they made a run, we started to panic and settled for 3-point shots.”

The Saints, who shot 68 percent in the second half, were led by 25 from Burrell while Menty and Manzer each had 21. Heather Stec added 11 points in her third game back this season.

Canisius starts the home portion of its MAAC schedule against Fairfield Thursday. Game time on Kid's Day at the Koessler Athletic Center is set for 12 pm.

Game Notes:
Canisius extended its streak of games with a made 3-point field goal to 404 on a make by Russell early in the first half... Laura Buetow set a career-high with four steals, all coming in the first half. The 6-foot-3 center previous career high was three. Buetow also tied her career high with five assists... Siena has won the last two games between the teams... Siena had no bench points and received all of its scoring from four players.
