Women's Soccer Falls to St. Francis, 1-0

The Canisius College women's soccer team lost a hard-fought contest with St. Francis (Pa.), 1-0, on Friday afternoon.

After a scoreless first half, St. Francis' Alanna Vespa tallied the game's only goal 5:49 into the second stanza. The Griffs' attempt to knot the contest in the game's final minutes fell short when the Red Flash's goalkeeper saved a shot attempt by Blair Sprouse (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.).

Sophomore Daniella Pettinari (Hilton, N.Y.) recorded two saves for the Griffs (0-2-1). St. Francis (3-1-0) won its third-straight game, all coming by shutout.

Canisius returns home to the Demske Sports Complex on Sunday to square off against Akron. Game time is set for noon.

Game Notes: Junior Carly McGunnigle (St. Catharines, Ontario) saw her first action of the season, recording two shots ... McGunnigle and senior Amanda Janosky (Derby, N.Y.) led the Griffs with two shots ... Both teams recorded 10 shots and the Griffs held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks ... It was the fourth-consecutive season that the final score between the two schools was 1-0, with St. Francis winning three of the four games ... Canisius fell to 5-3-0 all-time against the Red Flash.
