Women's Soccer Falls to Fairleigh Dickinson, 2-1

The Canisius College women's soccer team had its two-game winning streak snapped, falling to host Fairleigh Dickinson, 2-1, on Friday afternoon.

Sophomore Sylvia Kowalski (right) tallied her second goal of the season to lead the Griffs' offense. Sophomores Daniella Pettinari and Lesley Ivinac split time in goal. Pettinari made four first-half saves while Ivinac did not face any shots on goal in the second half.

The Knights opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Tonya Hipsman tallied her third goal of the season. Fairleigh Dickinson added another goal in the 41st minute as Zaida Castillo gave the Knights a 2-0 halftime advantage.

Kowalski tried to lead a Griffs rally, scoring in the 58th minute. Sophomore Meagan Jones gained possession of the ball in the box and setup Kowalski, who knocked the ball in the lower left of the net. The Knights defense, however, did not allow another shot on goal, en route to the victory.

Kowalski attempted a team-best six shots, including three on goal. The Knights' goalie Rachel Derrico recorded three saves in the win.

Canisius returns home to wrap up non-conference action on Sunday. The Griffs host Youngstown State at the Demske Sports Complex, beginning at noon.

Game Notes: Ivinac played in her first collegiate game ... Six of Canisius' seven goals in 2007 have come in the second half ... Kowalski tallied goals in back-to-back games for the second time in her career ... Jones recorded her first point of the season ... The Griffs and Knights had never played each other prior to Friday's contest.
