Fairfield Takes Down Volleyball in Three

Three Fairfield players had double digits in the kills column, led by Kelly Oliver's match-high 17, as the host Stags defeated Canisius 3-0 (30-23, 30-16, 30-18) Saturday afternoon in Fairfield, Conn. The win improves Fairfield to 6-9 overall and 3-1 in MAAC play, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 3-11 overall and 1-2 in the league.

Canisius freshman Renee Lettow (right) had a team-high 13 kills for Canisius in the loss, while fellow rookie Michella Domo added eight kills and a block assist. Junior Nicole Fafard was good for 12 digs for the Blue and Gold, the third-straight match where she's posted double figures in the digs category.

Oliver hit .324 on the day and added four block assists to go with her 17 kills. Lindsey Lee and Katie Mann were good for 11 kills apiece, while setter Barbie Thistle posted a match-high 46 assists and 11 digs. The Stags hit .405 as a team and finished the three-game match with six team blocks against Canisius' .157 team-attack percentage and one team block.

"We are going to have to play better against the quality teams in this league if we want to be one of the last four teams playing in November," Canisius head coach Cathy Hummel said. "Fairfield's a very good team, and when you make mistakes against them, they make you pay for it."

The Griffs return to the court Sunday at Iona. Match time is set for 2 p.m.

Match Notes: The loss at Fairfield snapped Canisius' five-game road win streak against league rivals, dating back to last season... The 13-kill effort by Renee Lettow marks the third time this season she's posted 10-plus kills in a match... Nicole Fafard is averaging 3.6 digs per game in the team's last five outings.
