Women's Soccer Rallies to Defeat St. Bonaventure, 3-2

hree different Canisius College student-athletes scored second-half goals to lead the Griffs to a 3-2 victory over rival St. Bonaventure. Senior Amanda Janosky scored the game-winning goal with less than five minutes remaining to lift Canisius to its second-straight victory.

“We are happiest with the character of the fight,” said Canisius head coach Meagan Dougherty. “We are showing more and more each game.”

Senior Stephanie Karst led the Griffs (2-4-1) with three points, recording a goal and an assist. Sophomore Sylvia Kowalski (right) also posted a goal, while freshman Laura Ellis added an assist for Canisius.

Sophomore goalkeeper Daniella Pettinari posted five saves in earning the victory.

“We are staring to do real well with good looks in front of the goal,” Dougherty said. “We are starting to put away our chances are we are starting to score the goals we should. That being said, we have a lot of work to do on defense. We are happy, not satisfied.”

St. Bonaventure (3-3-1) got on the scoreboard first, recording a goal 8:58 into the contest. Courtney Bosse got by the defense after a pass from Anna Cunningham to give the Bonnies the early advantage. The Griffs' best opportunity for a goal came in the 44th minute, when a Kowalski free kick hit the crossbar.

After ending the first stanza with more than 35 minutes of scoreless action, the teams combined for three early second-half goals. Karst tallied her second goal of the season just 2:39 into the half to knot the game at one. Ellis passed the ball down the field and Karst beat a defender and rocketed a shot past the Bonnies' goalkeeper. However, St. Bonaventure quickly reclaimed the advantage after Marilyn Wargo notched her third goal of the season 2:52 later. The Bonnies' lead would only last 56 seconds as the Griffs tied the game in the 52nd minute. A scrum in front of the goal led to Karst feeding Kowalski for her first goal of the season.

The two teams both battled hard for the next 40 minutes. St. Bonaventure's Leah Oleski had a shot ring off the post in the 71st minute and had another great opportunity in the 75th minute, only to see Pettinari make a diving save to keep the game knotted at two. Janosky tallied her team-leading third goal of the season with 4:56 remaining in the game to lead the Griffs to victory. Janosky made several moves to beat the Bonnies' defenders before knocking the ball in past the goaltender.

Canisius outshot St. Bonaventure, 15-10, in the game. With the win, the Griffs improved to 11-0-0 all-time against the Bonnies at home.

Canisius looks to make it three consecutive wins as the team wraps up non-conference action next weekend. The Griffs square off at Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday before returning home on Sunday to face Youngstown State.

Game Notes: Ellis' assist was her first collegiate point ... The 3:48 between the Griffs' first and second goal were the quickest back-to-back goals since Canisius tallied three goals in 1:07 against St. Peter's on October 21, 2005 ... Five of the six Canisius goals during the 2007 season have come in the second half.
