Western Michigan's Tom Oatley recorded a goal and registered an assist as the host Broncos defeated Canisius College 2-0 Friday afternoon in a non-conference game in Kalamazoo, Mich. The win improves Western Michigan to 4-4-0 this season, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 1-4-0.
Canisius was credited with 17 shots in the loss, with Simba Aberdeen (pictured) and Eddie Powell posting three apiece. Freshman goalkeeper Adam Catley made three saves in the first half before fellow freshman Matt Wopperer took over after the intermission. Wopperer made four stops in the second half for the Blue and Gold.
After a scoreless first half, the Broncos scored the game's first goal in the 57th minute when Jordan Fylonenko beat Wopperer to the far side with a shot from the middle of the box. That goal was set-up by Tom Oatley and Charlie Watts, who both received assists on the game-winning tally. Oatley scored Western Michigan's second goal of the contest in the 71st minute after working from the midfield to get off a shot off from the right side of the box.
Canisius will return to action Sept. 23, when the team travels to St. Bonaventure. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
