Women's Soccer Ties Buffalo, 1-1, in Home-Opener

The Canisius College women's soccer team rallied to tie cross-town rival Buffalo, 1-1, at the Demske Sports Complex. The Griffs scored with just over 11 minutes remaining in regulation before settling for the tie.

“I thought we fought hard,” said Canisius head coach Meagan Dougherty. “I think the biggest thing for me was going down a goal and fighting back to be in position to win. The effort across the board was great. The only negative was that we didn't win. I do think that this game will give us a jumping-off point for the season.”

The Bulls gained the early advantage when Heidi Griffiths scored in the 28th minute of the game. Buffalo was able to hold on to its lead until 79th minute when senior Amanda Janosky (Derby, N.Y.) took a great pass from junior Maggie Martini (Wallkill, N.Y.) and shot it past the Bulls goalie to tie the game at one.

Sophomore Daniella Pettinari (Hilton, N.Y.) matched a career-high with saves in goal. She made three great saves in the closing minutes of regulation to keep the game tied at one.

The Griffs (0-1-1) played very strong throughout the game and held a 31-13 advantage in shots. The Bulls (0-1-1) goalie, Amy Coron, recorded 12 saves.

“We definitely improved from last game in every department, especially the last four,” Dougherty said. “The goalkeeping remained strong and the attack was much more fluid.”

The Griffs are back in action on Friday, squaring off at St. Francis (Pa.). Game time is set for 4 p.m.

Game Notes: The Griffs now own a record of 17-9-1 in home openers ... Martini registered her first career assist ... Pettinari has recorded a career-best seven saves in back-to-back games.
