Women's Basketball Falls at Wright State

DAYTON, Ohio ? Kanisha Ward scored all of her game-high 15 points in the second half when as Wright State pulled away with a 57-40 victory over the Canisius College women's basketball team on Saturday at the Ervin J. Nutter Center.

Amanda Cavo led Canisius (3-3) in scoring with nine points but struggled from the field, shooting 2-for-15 overall and 1-of-11 from behind the arc. JJ Williams had all eight of her points from the free-throw line while Mere Mullins matched her career high with eight rebounds.

The teams played a sloppy first half and went into the locker room tied at 20-20. Wright State (2-5) committed 16 turnovers in the first half and shot 17.4 percent (4-for-23) from the field but went 10-of-12 from the charity stripe. Canisius held its biggest lead of the game (15-8) with 8:51 remaining in the first half but made only one field goal the rest of the half.

Wright State opened the second half with a 24-5 run during the first 8:16 to take command of the game. Lewis had nine of her points during that stretch. The Griffs could never significantly cut into the lead as they shot 17.9 percent in the second half and 21.1 percent for the game.

Ward and Whitney Lewis each scored 15 points for the Raiders while Lewis also had 10 rebounds to record a double-double.

“We didn't play with any energy, lacked intensity and were tentative,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “Coupled with our turnovers in the first half and early foul trouble, we weren't ready to play.”

Canisius opens conference play next weekend with two road games, starting at Rider on Friday.

Game Notes: Canisius extended its streak of games with a made 3-point field goal to 396 on a make by Micayla Drysdale in the first half... Tasia Lee saw her first action as a Golden Griffin and played late in the second half... Mullins has had eight rebounds on two other occasions in her career...
