Box Score

BUFFALO, N.Y. ? A combined seven first-half 3-pointers from Amanda Cavo and Micayla Drysdale gave the Canisius College women's basketball team a big first-half lead, and the Golden Griffins were able to hang on to defeat the University at Buffalo 70-62 on Saturday at Alumni Arena.

Cavo finished with a game-high 16 points, the second consecutive game the junior has led the team in scoring. Drysdale finished with 14 while Brittan? Russell had 15 points ? 11 in the second half ? to go along with seven steals. Laura Buetow had 13 points and 12 rebounds for the second double-double of her career.

“We got early makes on 3s from Amanda and Micayala, which gave us a little bit of a cushion in the first half,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “In the second half when our shots weren't falling as much, Brittan? was able to use the space and give us some important points.”

The Griffs (3-1) built a first-half lead as large as 19 points, which included a stretch where Canisius outscored Buffalo 20-5. During the run, Cavo and Drysdale combined to go 4-for-4 on 3-pointers.

Buffalo got as close as one in the second half but could never overtake the Griffins for the lead. Ashley Zuber had nine points ? all on 3-pointers ? in the second half. After the Bulls got within one at 49-48, Canisius went on a 16-6 run, sparked by a layup from Hailey Milligan. The run also included Russell scoring nine of 14 points for Canisius in a span of 6:30.

Stephanie Bennett led Buffalo (3-2) with 16 points while Zuber had 14. Heather Turner had seven points and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.

Canisius continues its road trip on Tuesday, when the Golden Griffins travel to the University of Notre Dame. Game time at the Joyce Center is set for 7 p.m.
