Women's Basketball Tops Binghamton

Box Score
Behind a game-high 25 points from junior Amanda Cavo and a late 3-pointer from Brittan? Russell, the Canisius College women's basketball team defeated Binghamton 65-56 on Tuesday night at the Koessler Athletic Center.

Cavo was 8-of-19 from the floor while shooting 3-of-11 from behind the arc and 6-of-7 from the line. The 25 points for Cavo are the second-most in her career as she had 28 against Niagara her freshman season. Russell, who played a career-high 40 minutes, had 11 of her 15 in the first half to go along with a game-high eight rebounds. Laura Buetow had seven points and seven rebounds while Hailey Milligan had eight points and six rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench.

“We jumped out to the early lead and then had to battle foul trouble,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “We battled in the second half, and got a big shot from Brittan? along with a great game from Amanda.”

Canisius (2-1) scored the first six points of the game and eventually held an 18-point lead with 2:44 remaining in the first half after a 3-pointer from Russell.

The Griffs went into the locker room with a 15-point advantage as the Bearcats (0-3) chipped away at the Canisius lead throughout the second half. Canisius was up 57-46 with 4:09 left in the game when Binghamton scored seven consecutive points to get within four.

With the score 58-54 and just over a minute left in the game, Russell dribbled along the left side of the arc and nailed a 3-pointer with 1:05 on the clock to put the Griffs up seven and put the game away.

“Binghamton was making a run, and the game was reaching the point where we needed one of our players to make the big shot,” Zeh said. “Brittan? decided tonight was going to be her night, and she drilled it.”

Binghamton had three players in double figures, led by 16 from Laura Franceski. The Bearcats shot 39.6 percent in the game but were only 1-of-14 from behind the arc.

Canisius begins a stretch where it plays eight of the next nine on the road on Saturday. The Griffs play at Buffalo in Alumni Arena at 5 p.m.
