Women's Soccer Blanks Iona, 1-0

The Canisius College women's soccer team earned its first conference win of the season, posting a 1-0 victory over Iona at the Demske Sports Complex. With the victory, the Griffs improve to 4-6-1 and 1-1-0 in MAAC play, while Iona fell to 2-11-0 and 0-2-0 in conference action.

“Our girls showed a lot of character,” said Canisius College head coach Meagan Dougherty. “We focused well at key moments, especially late in the first half.”

Senior Stephanie Karst (pictured) scored the game's only goal with just two seconds remaining the first half. The Griffs had a throw-in with less than two seconds remaining and the ball found freshman Kasey Makowski, who fed the ball to Karst. Karst fired the ball in on the right side of the net for her third goal of the season.

Sophomore Daniella Pettinari anchored a strong defensive showing in goal. She made three saves to earn her second shutout in the Griffs' last three matches.

Canisius controlled the tempo throughout the game. The Griffs held the advantage in shots (12-5) and corner kicks (7-1).

“We felt like we could have made some better decisions on the offensive side,” Dougherty said. “We had some great chances we just have to finish more to be successful down the line in conference play.”

The Griffs continue conference play this weekend, hitting the road for a pair of matches. Canisius plays at Manhattan on Friday and then visits Saint Peter's on Sunday.

Game Notes: Karst posted her fourth career game-winning goal, tied for the seventh-most in school history ... Makowski has posted an assist in three-consecutive games ... Jessica Leemans started her first collegiate game ... Canisius ended a four-game losing streak to the Gaels, but Iona still holds a 10-8-1 advantage in the series.
