Fairfield Edges Women's Soccer in Conference Opener

The Canisius College women's soccer team opened conference action on Friday, losing a hard-fought battle with Fairfield, 2-1.

“I though the effort was great,” said Canisius College head coach Meagan Dougherty. “The soccer was good. I thought there were set plays that we could have executed better but overall, our effort was great.”

Senior Amanda Janosky scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season, while freshman Kasey Makowski (pictured) posted an assist in her second-consecutive game. Janosky has tallied five goals in the Griffs' last five games. Sophomore Daniella Pettinari recorded one save in goal.

After the two teams played to a scoreless first half, the Stags (5-5-1, 1-0-0 MAAC) posted a goal in the game's 52nd minute. Fairfield's goalkeeper Brett Maron cleared the ball past the Canisius defense and Nicole Cavallaro took the ball and lofted it over Pettinari. In the 67th minute, Casey Frosby found the back of the net to give the Stags a two-goal advantage.

The Griffs did back down as Janosky attempted to rally the team. Makowski crossed the ball to the middle of the field and Janosky fired the shot in to pull the Griffs within one. However, Fairfield was able to hold on to the victory.

“It was one game and we have to move on,” Dougherty said. “We have to take what we can and do better on Sunday.”

The Griffs continue conference action at home on Sunday, hosting Iona. Game time is set for noon at the Demske Sports Complex.

Game Notes: The Griffs outshot the Stags, 13-8 ... Fairfield was called offsides 10 times ... Sophomore Sylvia Kowalski had her three-game scoring streak snapped ... The Griffs have scored 10 of their 11 goals in 2007 during the second half.
