Loyola Holds Off Women's Soccer

Loyola College junior Theresa Ferraina scored the game's only goal in the 65th minute to help lead the visiting Greyhounds to a 1-0 victory over Canisius College in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference contest Friday night at the Demske Sports Complex. The win improves Loyola to 6-5-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the MAAC while the Golden Griffins slip to 5-8-1 overall and 2-3-0 in league play.

Ferraina scored her seventh goal of the season off an assist from teammate Kristina Balfoort. The Greyhounds' goal came after Balfoort chipped a long pass down the field where it was controlled by a streaking Ferraina behind the Canisius defense. The Long Branch, N.J., native settled the ball and pushed forward to beat Canisius keeper Daniella Pettinari, who came out to the top of the box to force Ferraina's shot.

Canisius had a few scoring chances of its own in the second half, but the Griffs were unable to beat Loyola keeper Brittany Henderson for a goal, as she picked up her third shutout of the season after making one save. Canisius' best scoring chance of the night came in the game's 57th minute when senior back Lisa Nicholas (right) got off a shot from 40-yards out. Her wind-assisted shot went over Henderson's head, and only a team save in the box by a Loyola defender kept the Blue and Gold from taking a 1-0 advantage. The Greyhounds used that team save to their advantage, as they took control of the ball and scored moments later.

“Loyola took advantage of its best scoring chance and we weren't able to capitalize on the chances we had,” Canisius head coach Meagan Dougherty said. “Despite the loss, we need to take the momentum form this game and carry it over to Sunday when we play Rider.”

Loyola out shot Canisius 10-6 for the game, holding a 4-1 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes. Senior Amanda Janosky had a game-high four shots for the Griffs and Pettinari made three stops in net for the Blue and Gold.

Canisius will return to action Sunday, Oct. 21, as the team plays host to Rider. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
